Use scientific research to create an environment that helps children thrive
In the past decades, well-being, happiness and quality of life have become objects of research in the social sciences. Happiness studies emerged in the 1990s, in particular through the work of researchers such as Daniel Kahneman, Ed Diener, Martin Seligman or Mihály Csíkszentmihály. Following in the path opened by Economics and Psychology, the pioneering disciplines in Happiness studies, History, Anthropology, Sociology or Law are now focusing more and more on the topic. These studies often focus on health and education and allow us to learn about the factors accounting for educational success, physical and mental health through the different ages of life, or, more generally, performance optimization.
For instance, in education, a link is clearly made between students’ well-being and their educational success, as well as between educational success and:
- Feeling of competency
- Feeling of belonging
- Possibility to give meaning to learning
- Satisfaction of basic needs
The Lab School’s educational project is based on this scientific research. Ensuring the well-being of students and staff is not an end in itself, but aims to create the most favorable environment possible, to allow each individual to go at their own pace and according to their own abilities while giving their best.
The Lab school works in close cooperation with actors from different horizons involved in educational transition. With them, we created the Lab School Network. The network’s research focuses on the school climate and life as a community, on well-being in education, as well as on the disseminating and assessment of pedagogical innovations.
The Lab School is also meant to contribute to the reflection and the advancement of knowledge about educational issues. It is part of the process of pedagogical renewal to which more and more teachers, parents and researchers are committing today, with a constructive and collaborative approach. For this reason, we will regularly share online teaching materials created by the educational team. We will also conduct action research and try to involve other schools, private or public, in France or abroad, as much as possible.
